First time Advantage Database Server
installation
The Advantage Database Server supports the
Windows NT/2000/2003, NetWare, and Linux operating systems. Installation
instructions for the following operating systems are provided below (please
scroll down if you are unable to use the hyper links).
Windows
NT/2000/2003
NetWare
Linux
Operating System Cross Grade
When performing an Advantage Database Server
operating system cross grade (i.e., moving servers from one operating system
to another, such as NetWare to Windows) you will need to uninstall the
current version of the Advantage Database Server software you have and
follow the instructions in the First time Advantage Database Server
installation section above for a new installation for the server operating
system to which you are moving. Because your current serial number will
be reused, you will not be able to have both servers running at the same
time. If you need to have both servers running during a temporary OS transition,
please contact your Advantage sales representative to make arrangements.
Advantage Database Server Version Upgrades
Advantage Database Server version upgrades
fall under two main categories.
Minor release: A minor release upgrade
includes upgrading to a new maintenance (.x) release (e.g., Advantage Database
Server version 8.0 to version 8.1). The Advantage adsstamp.exe utility
can make the minor release upgrade very simple. Reinstallation of Advantage
Database Server is not necessary. See Advantage
Database Server Minor Version Upgrades and User Expansions
below for details.
Major release: A major release upgrade
includes upgrading to a new major (.0) release (e.g., Advantage Database
Server v7.1 to version 8.1). The Advantage adsstamp.exe utility should
NOT be used for a major upgrade. Instead, a full Advantage Database Server
install should be performed. See the First time Advantage Database Server
installation section above to perform a major release upgrade of Advantage
Database Server.
Advantage Database Server User Expansions
If you are increasing the maximum number
of users that can concurrently access your current version of the Advantage
Database Server (e.g., expanding from a 10-user to a 25-user version of
Advantage Database Server), the Advantage adsstamp.exe utility can make
the user expansion process very simple. Reinstallation of Advantage Database
Server is not necessary. See Advantage
Database Server Minor Version Upgrades and User Expansions
below for details.

Detailed Installation Instructions
Installing the Advantage Database
Server for Windows NT/2000/2003
Note You must have administrative
privileges to install the Advantage Database Server.
Run the installation program. Proceed through
the introductory windows that appear on the screen.
Once the Advantage Database Server files
have been copied, the Product Information window prompts you to enter the
Advantage Database Server serial number, validation code or authorization
code, and the optional replication code included with this email.
Enter the name of the registered owner of
the Advantage Database Server. Radio buttons exist to choose the Advantage
Database Server Service Startup option. If you are unsure of which startup
option to choose, the default Automatic is recommended.
International Advantage Database Server
version only: To properly perform string comparisons with local
languages, Advantage provides OEM/localized character sets to match your
country's language requirements. If your Advantage application uses OEM/localized
character sets, select the character set that matches your Advantage client
applications. Selecting a specific OEM/localized character set for all
Advantage installs (including Advantage Local Server) will guarantee the
OEM/localized character sets used by all Advantage applications will be
the same. If your Advantage applications use ANSI character sets only,
select Next.
To properly perform string comparisons when
using ANSI collation, Advantage provides ANSI character sets to match your
country's language requirements. If your Advantage application uses ANSI
character sets, select an ANSI character set to be used on the Advantage
Database Server. If <CURRENT SYSTEM LANGUAGE> is chosen, the currently
configured ANSI character set will be used. If you do not wish to use the
ANSI character set that is currently active, this setting can be used to
select a specific character set. Selecting a specific ANSI language
for all Advantage installs (including Advantage Local Server), rather than
selecting <CURRENT SYSTEM LANGUAGE>, will guarantee the ANSI character
sets used by all Advantage applications will be the same. It is recommended
that <CURRENT SYSTEM LANGUAGE> not be chosen unless this is the only
Advantage Database Server installation. Note that the Domestic (USA)
version of the Advantage Database Server supports English(American), English(Canadian),
and French Canadian only. If a different ANSI language is desired, an International
version of the Advantage Database Server must be installed.
International Advantage Database Server
version only:: The international version of Advantage Database
Server requires registration. A grace period of 6 days is allowed after
installation before the service will suspend and report a registration
error. See the Advantage Database Server documentation for more details.
Installing the Advantage Database
Server for NetWare
Note You must have administrative
privileges to install the Advantage Database Server.
Run the installation program. Proceed through
the introductory windows that appear on the screen.
Select the version of NetWare the Advantage
Database Server is to be installed upon. It is important that correct version
of NetWare be selected. If "NetWare Version 5.x or Greater" is
selected, the Advantage Database Server for NetWare (NetWare version 5
and greater) will be installed. This Advantage Database Server NLM has
support for IP and multiple processors. This NLM will not load on a NetWare
3.x or 4.x server.
Once the Advantage Database Server files
have been copied to the NetWare server, the Product Information window
prompts you to enter the Advantage serial number and a validation code
or an authorization code included with this email.
Enter the name of the registered owner of
the Advantage Database Server.

Installing the Advantage Database
Server for Linux
Note You must have superuser privileges
to install the Advantage Database Server.
Log in as superuser using the "su -"
command. This will set up the appropriate paths so the Advantage Database
Server installation can find all utilities necessary during the installation.
Extract the contents of the Advantage Database
Server tar distribution into a temporary directory using the command "tar
-xvzf adslinuxXX.tar.gz", where XX is the version of Advantage Database
Server being installed. International distributions will be named "adslinuxXX.intrn.tar.gz".
Read the contents of both the README and
INSTALL text files.
Start the installation by typing "./setup.pl".
Follow the on-screen prompts to complete
the installation.

applications. Selecting a specific OEM/Localized character set for all
Advantage installs (including Advantage Local Server) will guarantee the
OEM/Localized character sets used by all Advantage applications will be
the same.
Enter your serial number, validation code,
and the optional replication code included with this e-mail.
International Advantage Database Server
version only: If the server you are installing requires registration
you will be prompted to register the server. See the Non-USA Linux Software
Protection topic in the Advantage Help for more details.
To start the Advantage Database Server Daemon,
go to the installation destination directory and type "./adsd".
You can use the command "ps -A" to verify the new adsd threads
appear in the process list. See the Understanding Linux Daemons
topic in the Advantage Help documentation for more information on how to
start and stop the Advantage Database Server for Linux.
Advantage Database Server Minor
Version Upgrades, User Expansions, and Replication Activation
For best results, while using a computer
running a Windows operating system, run the adsstamp.exe utility from the
directory in which the Advantage Database Server is installed. For example,
if the Advantage Database Server is installed in the e:\Program Files\Extended
Systems\Advantage 8.0\Server directory, change your current directory to
e:\Program Files\Extended Systems\Advantage 8.0\Server and run adsstamp.exe.
Important Note Stop or unload the
Advantage Database Server before running the adsstamp.exe utility.
Minor Version Upgrades
From the opening dialog in the adsstamp.exe,
choose the Upgrade option to upgrade to a new minor (.x) version
of the Advantage Database Server. On the next dialog, enter the path to
the new Advantage Database Server binary (ads.nlm for NetWare, ads.exe
for Windows NT/2000/2003) or use the Browse button to browse to the location
of the new binary. Upon clicking the Finish button, the new version of
the Advantage Database Server will be installed with the product information
from the existing version of the Advantage Database Server (if new licensing
or language settings are desired, choose the Languages or License option
from the main dialog after the upgrade is complete). Upon a successful
upgrade, the old version of the Advantage Database Server binary will be
renamed ads.old.
Note Advantage Database Server upgrade
functionality via the adsstamp.exe utility does not work with the Advantage
Database Server for Linux. The upgrade functionality works with all other
versions of the Advantage Database Server.
Note The adsstamp.exe utility is designed
for upgrading minor (.x) versions of the Advantage Database Server, such
as from Advantage Database Server v8.0 to Advantage Database Server v8.1.
If upgrading to a new major (x.) version, such as upgrading from Advantage
Database Server v7.1 to Advantage Database Server v8.1, it is recommended
that the adsstamp.exe not be used. Run the full Advantage Database
Server installation program if updating to a new major version of the Advantage
Database Server.
Note When upgrading to a minor
(.x) version of the Advantage Database Server for Windows NT/2000/2003,
if Advantage Extended Procedures (AEPs) or Triggers are being used by the
Advantage Database Server, the newer versions of the ACE32.DLL and AXCWS32.DLL
should be manually copied to the Advantage Database Server installation
directory. The adsstamp.exe does not automatically upgrade these DLLs.
Advantage Database Server User Expansions
and Replication Activation
To change the current licensing information,
registered owner, or startup setting (Windows NT/2000/2003 only) of the
Advantage Database Server, choose the License option from the opening dialog
of the adsstamp utility. On the Product Information dialog, you may then
change the serial number, validation code or authorization code, and replication
code the registered owner, or the startup setting. Entering a new validation
code with the existing serial number allows for expansion of the Advantage
Database Server to a higher number of users, such as from a 10-user version
of the Advantage Database Server to a 25-user version. Entering a replication
code with the existing serial number enables Advantage Replication.
Note Advantage Database Server
expansion and product information modification via adsstamp.exe does not
work with the Advantage Database Server for Linux. To perform simple Advantage
Database Server for Linux expansion and product information modifications,
see the install.txt file that is installed with the Advantage Database
Server for Linux for detailed instructions.
